AIANZ this week

The Interim Aviation Council (IAC), of which AIANZ is a member, met yesterday in Wellington to progress work on the National Policy Statement (NPS) for aviation.

Chief Executive Simon Wallace presented a paper on Innovation and Emerging Technology which was complied with expert input from UAVNZ and others.

Other strands of the NPS progressed yesterday included ambition, infrastructure and workforce. The NPS is scheduled to be completed in 2025.

Aside from AIANZ, members of the Council include the Airports Association, NZALPA, BARNZ, Air New Zealand, Auckland Airport, the CAA, MOT, NZDF, Wisk Aero and Air Ruatoria.

Simon also attended the Aspeq Board meeting in Lower Hutt while Simon and Stefanie Dixon, AIANZ Office Administrator, met with Duncan Ferrier of the Aviation Law Association.

NZAAA - Two industry pioneers pass away

It is with great sadness that we note the recent passing of two pioneers and stalwarts of the agricultural aviation sector.

Denny Atkinson passed away in June aged 90. You can read the full story of Denny’s career here: Dennis Frank (Denny) Atkinson: From Baker to Ag Pilot

Neville Worsley passed away July 2, at the age of 84. It was Neville's wish not to have a large funeral (private family cremation) but instead to hold a large celebration.

Neville's memorial will be held at 'Hangar 6' at the Hawera Aerodrome on the 31 August 2024 at 1:00pm. Anyone interested in attending should contact Neville's son Pat on 021 1390 363 for an indication of numbers hoping to attend.

Our thoughts are with their families at this sad time.

NIWA - Airstrip Forecaster (ASF)

Please see the following notice from NIWA regarding their Airstrip Forecast app.

Following on from three years of R&D and commercial deployment to prove its economic value with SuperAir, NIWA is looking to make the ‘Air Strip Forecaster' app available more widely.

For interested parties, the plan is to demonstrate the app's ability to serve up aviation-focused weather parameters, including high resolution forecasts of visibility, occurrence of fog, wind speed, direction and gust, lightning and cloud base above ground for areas of interest, through a series of 30-minute demonstrations, including time for some Q&A.

Assuming interest, NIWA would move to a three-month commercial (cost recovery) trial from October through to December, with the option to extend the trial a further three months. Pricing for the trial is dependent on the number of trialists, aircraft and locations but will likely range from $1.5k to $3.5k for the three-month period.

Dates for the virtual demonstration are:

  • Friday 2 Aug 10:00-10:30am
  • Monday 5 Aug 1:00-1:30pm
  • Wednesday 7 Aug 1:00-1:30pm

To receive a virtual invite to a demonstration time that suits then please RSVP to Mark.Bojesen-Trepka@niwa.co.nz,  or Chris.Brandolino@niwa.co.nz
